Standard Candle Company is a committed group of young adults in the Syracuse area who are interested in the arts, flirting with theatrical boundaries, and creating low-cost, high-quality, avant-garde productions.

The performances of Ferdinand Bruckner’s Pains of Youth as translated by Martin Crimp will be at Spark Contemporary Art Space at August 6th & 7th at 7:30pm. On Saturday August 7th there will also be a matinee at 1:30pm. Tickets are just 5 dollars and some proceeds are going to be donated to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in honor of Rochester leukemia patient-in-remission Ian Gauger. Seating is limited, so please come early, or call ahead if you have a larger party. Due to the nature of the play, we suggest mature audiences only.

The front lobby will be transformed into an art gallery displaying many works from local artists. Some of the works will be for sale. Refreshments and chapbooks of poetry will also be sold.

Gypsies, Pirates, and…..Cowboys! Make sure you pick a theme and dress up! We can’t wait to see what everyone will be wearing! Gallery opens at 1 PM. Music starts at 7PM! $6 after 7!

Our benefit is going towards getting bikes for refugees. There are an estimated 700 refugees coming into Syracuse every year. That’s a lot! The CYO Refugee Resettlement Program is having a hard time providing transportation due to lack of time…and funds. We decided raising money for bikes would be perfect. especially with it being summer and all! We are also planning on having a critical mass of cyclists going from the tennis courts at Berry Park at 6PM through Syracuse ending its route at Spark. Come ride and raise awareness! And what better way to end a bike ride then with some music, art, and an ice cold refreshing beverage!

Our fiscal sponsors and support for this event are Alchemical Nursery. They just completed a project called the Trash Transformer Art Project. This is it. This is for real. The best thing that could possibly happen… is happening. That’s right folks, our cultish leaders at Everything is Terrible! – the premier website for found footage freakouts are appearing live with their all new movie! (‘Everything Is Terrible! Presents: 2Everything2Terrible2: Tokyo Drift.’) The EIT! gang have been working like pampered, over-fed slaves for the past year, bringing together literally thousands of hours of brain boiling VHS into one jam-packed jewel of an experience. The movie itself cannot be described, except that it is a full length mashup of oddities including cat massaging, magick krystals, 90′s internet prophesies, and the cutest form of evil to ever walk the Earth (oh you’ll see). Think Tim & Eric, but real. And if that wasn’t already the koolest popsicle in the fridge, the gang will be appearing IN THE MELTED FLESH to coax you into their disturbingly hilarious world – and this time, EIT! has upped the ante. Their show has been described as ‘a mix of The Holy Mountain, The Neverending Story, and that weird cult sex scene from Eyes Wide Shut’. Now send that on a seven year vision quest into the belly of the beast and you have some idea of what’s in store. Don’t forget to bring that extra face of yours, cause the one you got will melt off!

Lord of the Yum Yum

Known for strange vocal ruminations and a hilarious live show, Lord of the Yum Yum promises only the highest quality, most enriching and mind numbing entertainment all at the same time. Lord of the Yum Yum, aka Paul V., combines a guttural scat vocal style, classical/jazz themes, throat singing, improvisation, and electronics to take the modern voice to a new place. As a performer, Paul has toured nationally with a concentration on the Midwest and since 1991, he has done many radio and television appearances as well as hundreds of performances around the greater Chicago area.

About:
Bryan Puccia, known to most of us smashers as Bry or Kanto, has been the spark of the Syracuse smash community since August 2009, when he announced his first tournament here on the boards. Since then, he has succeeded in bringing Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, and Buffalo (+ others) into one unified community that has improved both in skill and bond by amounts too great to describe in words. His last tournament, Syracuse Smash 2, brought in top tier competition from locations as varied as Canada, Massachusetts, and New Jersey for both Brawl and Melee. Despite extreme difficulties including a power outage at the original venue, he persevered and managed to create a spectacular event at the last second that sent everyone home very happy and satisfied with their weekend’s tournament experience.

To the great dismay of everyone who had the honor of knowing him, on Tuesday, May 25th, Bry suffered a heart attack while swimming at the beach, and is no longer with us. He had been in the process of organizing a third tournament prior to his departure. We have decided to hold this tournament to honor Bryan’s memory, and a portion of the pot will be donated to his family as a token of our appreciation for the man they brought to us.

Unbeknownst to much of the public, the wheels of creativity have been turning in our corner of town over these past few months. Although summer is not typically the period during which Spark blazes with activities, things are a little different this year. A shining example is the recent development in our partnership with XPACE Cultural Centre in Toronto.  On July 1, 2o10, we were given the gift of Dylin North and Lena Chun, two graduates of the Ontario College of Art and Design, who were sent to Spark to participate in a three-week long artist residence. Since that date, they have been busily at work, creating, designing, building, and filling Spark with their unique art, composed of painting and sculpture which utilize found objects and employ techniques involving rotoscoping and AfterEffects animation. Their opening, this Thursday, July 22, will be a celebration of both this new collaboration between Spark and XPACE and the creative process of two amazing artists whom we have been privileged to host in our space over these past few weeks. We hope to see you there!
